Photo Essay Write-Up

Grimsby Beach began life as a Methodist summer church camp. In the 1870s, the original tent accommodation began to be replaced by permanent board and batten cottages, trimmed with elaborate gingerbread or fretwork. The neighbourhood fell into disrepair after the Second World War, but was given a second chance to shine when new owners moved in over the past two decades. Today, the colourful cottages turned full-time homes frequently find themselves on historical walking tours.
This area I photographed, I live relatively close to, so I walked down to Bell Park Beach and photographed the many houses. At first I was dissapointed about the weather, it was a grey and gloomy day but with my photoshop process, the cloud cover made for a really great black and white background.
In editing, I really wanted the colours of the houses to stand out, so I removed the backround colours in each scene, and increased the staturation of the homes. For the background of my spread, I used a picture of the the beach because the houses are on the beach so they would on the beach in both the neighbourhood and the spread.
My cover is a photograph of my favorite home of Bell Park. It was one of the very few houses that didn't have a modern car in the driveway. The Fiat Spider was the perfect colour and the perfect angle to match well with the house. The de-saturated space around the focal point made the photo perfect for a cover page. The second house I included in my spread is one of the originals from the 1870's. It survived the second world war, has been restored, and even still has most of its original structure and trim. The third violet and green house, was not an original. It is one of the many that have been redone by the owners to look like the originals. They have painted the houses the colour of their choice, and had custom trim made for the roofs to add more bright colours to the beautiful neighbourhood. I photographed the bell in the centre of the park because, though no longer functional, it is a historic relic that represents the towns history. It was rung for town meetings and and to warn of the the enemy. Today children who play in the park still ring it, they love to hear the pang of metal when they strike it with a rock. I have also done so when i played there as a kid. The neighbourhood continues to grow, with more houses converted into elaborately trimmed cottages each year. Grimsby Beach, from its unique and gorgeous homes, to its rich history is cherished in the town, amazing to those who have never seen it, and will never be lost to time.

Magazine Cover and Spread

Dear Heritage Magazine Canada,
I am a historical freelance photographer with an essay plan that would be a great addition to your magazine.
I plan to do a spread on the spectacular historic homes on Grimsby Beach. These are a popular, but often missed tourist destination of elaborately trimmed, bright coloured homes hidden in the streets along the beach. Many have been restored and repainted after the destruction of World war Two and plain houses have been redone to fit in with the originals.
This would make for an interesting and enticing spread with Grimsby’s rich history and the eye-catching bright and unique colours of the gorgeous historic homes. This one-of-a-kind neighbourhood needs further recognition and tourism. This part of Grimsby is really a once in a lifetime experience that more people need to see and it would be a very popular article if it was to be featured in your magazine.
