Gr. 12 Extension Assignment #2

These photographers both shoot potraits, though the subject matter of humans and emotion seems similar, upon closer analysis it is clear that theme and style in their work differ greatly. A lot more of Larry Clark's photos are black and white and Sultan usually uses colour more often than not. Both of their photographs are relatively "set up" but I think Larry Sultans are more so than Clarks with people and objects being strategically placed using composition and Clark having more naturally shot photos. A number of Larry Clark's photos have a much darker mood than Sultan's involving subjects such as suicide, self harm and drug use whilst Sultans tell more of a general story rather than focusing on the emotions in expression. Both of their styles involve nudity though Larry Clark portrays It in a more subtle way and Sultan's use of it is broader and undisguised. Though the artists use the same subject matter it is clear that their styles and interpretation of human emotion and activity vary from each other greatly.
